# Personas

Create different versions of yourself for your companions to talk to.

A persona tells your companion who you are in the story: your name, your background and what you're like. Use different personas for different stories, or one default that follows you everywhere.

## What's in a persona

| Field | What to put there | Limit |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------ | ---------------- |
| **Name**                 | What she calls you. Required.              | 50 characters    |
| **About me / backstory** | Who you are: job, past, situation. | 1,000 characters |
| **Preferences / rules**  | How you'd like her to treat you.           | 1,000 characters |
| **Appearance** | How you look. Used for your persona image. | 300 characters |

You can have up to **10 personas**.

## Create a persona

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open Personas

Click **Personas** in the sidebar, then **New persona**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Fill it in

Add a name and as much detail as you like.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Save

Click save. Personas are checked against our content rules when you save them; if something isn't allowed, you'll be asked to revise it.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Your default persona

Mark one persona as your default with **Set as default persona**. It's pre-selected whenever you start a new chat, and you can still pick another one.

## Using a persona in a chat

You choose the persona when you start a chat. It stays with that chat for good; to talk as someone else, start a [new chat](/help/get-started/multiple-chats.md).

## Persona image

Give your persona a face. Describe your appearance, then click **Generate**. An image costs **2 tokens** and is refunded if it fails. Images are generated from your description; uploading a photo isn't supported.

## Deleting a persona

Chats that used a deleted persona keep working, but your companion no longer gets that persona's details in them. Anything you said in the chat itself stays in the conversation.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://dreamdolls.gitbook.io/help/get-started/personas.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
